Solution

Catalytic oxidation of Ammonia NH3:

  • When ammonia gas and oxygen are passed over heated platinum, a catalyst, ammonia is oxidized to form colourless nitric oxide. When this gas comes in contact with air, it turns brown.
  • 4NH3(g)+5O2(g)800°CPt4NO(l)+6H2O(g)+Heat2NO(g)+O2(g)2NO2(g)(Reddishbrown)
  • This NO2 reacts with water to produce a mixture of nitric acid and nitrous acid.
  • 2NO2g+H2OlHNO3aq+HNO2g

Therefore, industrial process starts with reaction for the catalytic oxidation of ammonia is Ostwald process. The catalyst used is platinum.
