Question

What inspired N. Bartllett for carrying out reaction between Xe and PtF6 ?

Open in App
Solution

Neil Bartlett (1962) prepared a compound O+2PtF6 by the reaction.

O2(g)+PtF6(g)O+2[PtF6]

He realised that the first ionization enthalpy of oxygen and xenon are almost same.

Ist IE of O2=1175kJmol1

Ist IE of Xe=1170kJmol1

This led him to the thought that a compound of xenon similar to O+2[PtF6] can be preapred. He made efforts for the same and was successful in making a red colour compound Xe+PtF6 by mixing PtF6 and xenon.

Xe+PtF6278kXe+[PtF6]
