Neil Bartlett (1962) prepared a compound $O_{2}^{+} P t F_{6}^{-}$ by the reaction.

$O_{2} (g) + P t F_{6} (g) \to O_{2}^{+} [P t F_{6}]^{-}$

He realised that the first ionization enthalpy of oxygen and xenon are almost same.

Ist IE of $O_{2} = 1175 k J m o l^{- 1}$

Ist IE of $X e = 1170 k J m o l^{- 1}$

This led him to the thought that a compound of xenon similar to $O_{2}^{+} [P t F_{6}]^{-}$ can be preapred. He made efforts for the same and was successful in making a red colour compound $X e^{+} P t F_{6}^{-}$ by mixing $P t F_{6}$ and xenon.
