What is a bimetallic strip? What happens when it is heated? Why?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The bimetallic strip is used in a thermostat to control the temperature of ovens, electric irons, refrigerators, furnaces, and other appliances.
  2. The bending of the strip is used to switch the appliance off at a certain temperature.
  3. For example, in an oven, the arrangement is such that the heaters are switched off when the required temperature is reached.
  4. When the temperature drops again, the strip straightens and the heaters are switched on. Thus, the temperature is controlled.
