In 1971, UNESCO initiated a programme called the Biosphere Reserve under the Man & Biosphere (MAB) programme.
Biosphere Reserves are defined as the internationally recognized areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems that promote solutions to facilitate the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use.
The biosphere reserves play an important role in the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species, and genetic variation.
Examples of Biosphere Reserves include the Dibru-Saikhowa biosphere reserve in Assam, the Dehang-Dibang biosphere reserve in Arunachal Pradesh, etc.
