A compound is a substance that can be split into simpler and different substances by chemical means.

For example, Water $({\mathrm{H}}_2\mathrm{O})$ is a compound made with two different substances called Hydrogen ($\mathrm{H}$) and Oxygen($\mathrm{O}$). Hence it can be split into these two different substances hydrogen(H) and oxygen($\mathrm{O}$).
