Question

What is a contractile vacuole? State its function in amoeba.

Open in App
Solution

Answer

Contractile vacuole is an organelle found in the amoeba that stores excess water with ammonia dissolved in it to excrete it later.
Excretion in amoeba takes place from the surface by simple diffusion.
Excess water in the cell of the amoeba is stored in the contractile vacuole and since ammonia is soluble in water, it is stored in the contractile vacuole.
Contractile vacuole increases in size when a large amount of water is filled in it and shrinks when the water is released in the surrounding from the cell surface.
