Covalent compound

  • A compound whose atoms are bonded via a covalent bond is known as a covalent compound.
  • A covalent bond is formed by sharing one or more pairs of valence electrons.

Example-

  • Carbon compounds are the most appropriate example of a covalent compound, as the valence shell of carbon has 4 electrons, which are incapable of donation and acceptance.
  • Hence, the best possible method is to share the 4 electrons to make a bond.
  • Examples are methane (CH4),hydrogen (H2), oxygen (O2) etc.
