What is a crescent moon?
Small portion of Moon visible in the sky on the day before or after new moon day.
The small portion of the Moon visible in the sky before or after the new moon day is called the crescent moon. It is the lunar phase that resembles a sickle and therefore also termed as the sickle moon. Waxing means the Moon's illumination is growing and Waning means Moon's illumination is decreasing. Hence waxing crescent is seen after new moon and waning crescent is seen before new moon.
