Question

What is a density bottle? Why do we use a density bottle for measuring the density of the liquids? What is the process through which we can measure through the density bottle?

Solution

A density bottle is any bottle of known volume that can be weighed empty and then weighed containing the liquid whose density you wish to determine.

Then, Density=MassVolume

Process

  1. The accuracy of determining density or relative density is determined by the combined accuracy of measuring the volume and weight of a given quantity of the substance.
  2. While measuring the relative density of liquids, two common methods of measuring the volume are a measuring cylinder and a density bottle.
  3. Among these two methods, the density bottle gives a more accurate measurement of the volume, resulting in a more accurate determination of density or relative density.
  4. Volume is measured using a measuring cylinder by pouring a given quantity of the liquid in the cylinder and reading out the quantity against the graduations provided in the cylinder for the purpose.
  5. In this method, errors can occur due to the limitation of the human eye to differentiate between minor variations in the level of the liquid in the cylinder.
  6. Also generally the graduations in the measuring cylinder are not marked too accurately.
