What is dielectric substance?

Dielectric substances are the substances which gets polarised under the influence of external electric field. The dielectric substance generates an induced electric field (due to polarisation) in the opposite direction to the external field and so net electric field inside the dielectric material gets reduced.
The factor by which the electric field inside the material gets reduced is known as dielectric constant of that material.
