Question
What does a diode do?

Solution
Diode is device which allows the flow of current in only one direction, and doesn't allow the current to flow in the other direction.
Diodes also change the characteristics of current from AC to DC, so it can be also used in the purpose of a rectifier.
Based on the voltage, current capacity the diodes are rated
Diode can be forward or reverse biased, when forward biased it allows current to flow.
When reverse biased it blocks the flow of current.
