Disaster
  • It is a sudden calamity, is a serious disruption to the functioning of a society, and causes great damage, loss, destruction, and devastation of life and property.
  • It is a serious problem occurring over a short or long period of time that causes widespread human, material, and economic or environmental loss that exceeds the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources.
Disasters are classified into two categories-natural and man-made disasters.
  • Natural disaster is a major unfavorable event resulting from the natural process of the Earth. Flood, earthquakes, tsunamis, forest fires and cyclones are some examples of natural disasters.
  • Disasters resulting from the activities of man are called man-made disasters. Stampedes, riots and war are examples of man-made disasters.
