Fruit:-

  1. Fruit is a mature/ripened ovary and its contents formed after fertilization.
  2. Fruit is a seed-bearing structure, which is exclusively found in the angiosperms.
  3. Before fertilization, the ovary encloses single/multiple ovules.
  4. After fertilization, the ovule converts into seed and the ovary matures into a fruit.
  5. Fruits are mainly divided into three main categories: Simple fruits, Aggregate fruits and Composite fruits.

Types of fruits:

Simple fruits:

  1. Fruits derived from a single ovary are known as simple fruits.
  2. Simple fruits can have one or many seeds in the fleshy wall.
  3. Examples: plum, walnut and apple.

Aggregate fruits:

  1. A fruit that consists of several separate carpels of one apocarpous gynoecium is known as aggregate fruit.
  2. Examples: strawberry, magnolia and raspberry.

Composite fruits:

  1. A fruit that develops from the different flowers of an inflorescence is known as composite fruit.
  2. Examples: pineapple, mulberry and fig.
