A Functional Group represents an atom/ group of atoms, bonded to carbon chain and it defines the chemical property of the organic compound. For example, $- O H$ represents hydroxyl group that is functional group of an alcohol. Also $- C H O$ represents an aldehyde.
$- C O O H$ represents carboxylic group.
