Lake is a large body of water that is entirely surrounded by land. Lake water can be fresh or more rarely salty or saline.
The importance of lakes are as follows
(i) Lakes are of great value to human beings. It helps to regulate the flow of a river.
(ii) During heavy rainfall, it prevents flooding and during the dry season, it helps to maintain an even flow of water.
(iii) Lakes can also be used for developing hydel power. They moderate the climate of the surroundings; maintain the aquatic eco-system, enhance natural beauty, help develop tourism and provide recreation.
(iv) Lakes can provide us with prime opportunities for recreation, tourism, and cottage or residential living. It also helps to replenish groundwater.
