Question

What is a Micrometer used for?

Open in App
Solution

  1. A micrometer is a mechanical device that can be used to do the measurements of length.
  2. The object that we want to measure the length of is kept between the Measuring faces and the Thimble is rotated until the object fits between the Anvil and Spindle.
  3. Then the measurement is done from the main scale and circular scale.
  4. For every millimeter on the main scale, there are 100 divisions on the circular scale.
  5. Meaning when we rotate the circular scale by 100 divisions, we measured the length up to 1mm. Hence the least count of micrometer is 0.01mm.
  6. The least count of a measuring device is the smallest unit that can be measured with the device.
  7. If we get the reading on the main scale and circular scale as 5 mm and 34 divisions respectively, the measured length will be 5+0.01×34=5.34mm
  8. Hence, to measure small distances with high precision, like the diameter of a wire, we can use a micrometer.
