What is a neutralisation reaction ? Explain with an example. Give the chemical equation of the reaction which takes place.
Reactions between an acid and a base are known as neutralization reactions. On mixing an acid with a base, i.e., in a neutralization reaction, salt and water are obtained as products. Also, energy is evolved during the process. The general equation for the neutralization reaction is represented as:
Acid+Base⟶Salt+Water
For example, when sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is treated with hydrochloric acid (HCl), then a salt, i.e., sodium chloride (NaCl) and water ( H2O) are obtained. The chemical equation for the neutralization reaction is given as:
NaOH+HCl⟶NaCl+H2O
