What is a Nickel-Cadmium storage cell?

Open in App
Solution

Nickel-Cadmium storage cell

  • A nickel-cadmium battery converts chemical energy to electrical energy upon discharge and converts electrical energy back to chemical energy upon recharge.
  • The nickel-cadmium batteries are secondary cells since the chemical reaction is reversible and the cell can also be recharged as a result.
  • The cathode (positive plate) of a Ni-Cd battery is built of nickel oxide hydroxide, and the electrode anode negative plate) is made of metallic cadmium.
  • The electrolyte in between the two electrodes, an aqueous alkali solution is used.
In Ni Cd storage cell, anode consists of:

Application Nickel-Cadmium storage cell

  • Portable power tools, photographic equipment, flashlights, emergency illumination, & portable electronic gadgets all used sealed Ni-Cd batteries.
  • Ni-Cd use has mainly been replaced due to nickel-metal hydride batteries' better capacity and the recent decrease in price.
  • Depending on the battery's size, the Ni-Cd battery is recognized to offer a range of discharge rates.
