Respiration rate:

  1. Respiration rate is the rate at which breathing occurs and is controlled by the respiratory center of the brain.
  2. It is usually measured in the number of breaths per minute.
  3. Respiration rate represents the movement of air in and out of the lungs.
  4. Respiration rate and heart rate are interconnected, the more the heart beats, the more breathing occurs.
  5. For each heartbeat it needs energy in the form of oxygen so the respiration rate also increases.
  6. Respiration rates may increase with different health issues including fever, illness, and other medical conditions.

Normal respiration rate:

  1. The normal respiration rate for healthy adults is 12 to 16 breaths per minute.
  2. The normal respiration rate varies with age and health.
  3. If the respiration rate is high i.e. more than 20 breaths per minute, it is known as tachypnea.
