Question

What is a polar and a non-polar solute

Open in App
Solution

A molecule which develops a net positive and negative charge due to difference in electronegativities of different elements is said to be polar.

A polar solute will only dissolve in a polar solvent. For example water is a polar solvent and polar solutes can easily dissolve in water.

A molecule with no net charge on its constituent atoms is called non polar. Non polar solvents like organic solvent dissolve non polar molecules like some organic compounds.
