What is a pyramid of energy? Energy is lost in the form of heat from one trophic level to next. Explain.
The energy is in the form of food which is consumed by the organisms of each trophic level. Food is a form of chemical energy by nature and it is stored in the organisms as potential energy. Plants prepare food by using solar energy by the process of photosynthesis. Hence, they are producers. When the consumer (primary consumers, herbivores) consumes the energy is transferred from one trophic level (lower trophic level) to the next. Some amount of energy further gets transferred to the next trophic level when the secondary consumers (carnivores) consume primary consumers.
Such energy is utilised by the organisms for their metabolic processes which helps in their growth, reproduction and performance of their regular activities. In a way the energy is lost. There is no complete transfer of energy from one trophic level to the next. Therefore there is loss of energy in the form of heat from one trophic level to the next trophic level.
