Reflex action are those activities that are not controlled by the brain to think and need quick action such as taking away a hand on touching the hot object.
- Such activities are controlled by the peripheral nervous system along with the spinal cord and some parts of the brain.
- Consider an example of the action of the hand on touching the fire to understand reflex action.
Following are the steps that take place in this reflex action:
1. Sense of burning is received by the sensory receptors in the fingers as a stimulus.
2. Impulse is generated which is carried to the spinal cord by sensory neurons.
3. Impulse reaches the nerve ending of the sensory neurons.
4. Impulse passes through the relay neuron present in the grey matter of the spinal cord.
5. Impulse is passed to the motor neuron that carries the impulse away from the spinal cord.
6. Impulse reaches the nerve endings of the motor neurons and is transmitted to the muscles of the hand.
7. Response of sudden taking away of the hand from the fire is produced.
