Open in App
Solution

Instructions:
  • Explain what a river dispute is
  • Mention the major river disputes in Karnataka
  • Give measures to solve the problem
Solution:
Rivers are not built by man made boundaries. When the river flows, people have a right to use the water from that river. But nowadays, people fight for the use of these river waters. Such fights between states on the basis of the use of river water are called river disputes.

Kaveri river dispute:
In the case of the river Kaveri, it flows through Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.
Kaveri river dispute refers to the conflicts between the states of Karnataka and TamilNadu with regard to sharing of Kaveri water.

Krishna river dispute:
Krishna dispute refers to the water sharing and utilization disputes between the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

River water disputes occur due to the scarcity of water or the people fight each other when the water level of each state gets low.
The state from which the river originates or the state to where it flows and has its long stretch of course does not have the ownership of that river. It belongs to all its people equally or it should have an equitable sharing according to the needs of each state. An equitable sharing of river water helps to solve these kinds of river disputes between the states
