What is a server?

A server is a computer, equipped with specific programs and /or hardware, to enable it to offer services to other computers (clients) on its network (connected to it).

The machine (computer- along with its software) that serves other computers is called the server.
The machine (computer -along with its software) that requests service from the above computer is called client.

The client computers are connected to the server computer via a network. Several client computers may be connected to one server.

There are different types of servers:
(i) web server- that provides web service.
(ii) file server-that provides access to certain files
(iii) application server -stores and manages applications
(iv) print server - manages printer usage in an organization
