Question

What is a simple pendulum? Define oscillation and time period of a simple pendulum.

Open in App
Solution

A simple pendulum consists of a small, metallic, solid sphere suspended from a rigid support, such that it is free to oscillate.
Oscillation is the distance travelled by the pendulum from its mean position to one extreme position, then coming back to mean position, then going to the other extreme position, and again coming back to the mean position.
The time taken to complete one oscillation is termed as the time period of the pendulum.
