Question

What is a solenoid? Draw a diagram with a solenoid connected in a circuit. How can you increase the strength of a solenoid?

Solution

Step 1: Solenoid:

  1. A solenoid is a long piece of wire wrapped in the form of a coil.
  2. When an electric current flows through a coil, it produces a relatively uniform magnetic field within the coil.
  3. The solenoid can generate a magnetic field from electric current, and this magnetic field can be used to generate linear motion using a metal core.
  4. This device can be used in a circuit as an electromagnet, an inductor, or a miniature wireless receiving antenna.
  5. The solenoid operates solely on electromagnetism.

Step 2: Diagram of solenoid is given below:

Step 3: The magnetic strength of the solenoid can be increased by

  • Increasing the density of the turns.
  • By increasing the current flow in the coil.
