Strobili or strobilus :

  1. The reproductive system of gymnosperms is known as a strobilus.
  2. The male and female strobilus can be present on the same tree as in Pinus or can be present on a different tree as in Cycas.
  3. Sexual reproduction in gymnosperms takes place through the formation of spores.
  4. These spores are produced within sporangia that are borne on sporophylls.
  5. These sporophylls are arranged in a compact structure called strobili or cones.
  6. These strobili bear microsporophylls which produce pollen grains and megasporophylls producing ovules.
  7. The pollen grains released by air currents from microsporangium of microsporophyll fuse with ovules borne on megasporophylls.
  8. After fertilization zygote develops into an embryo and ovules into naked seeds.
