Question

What is a sucrose (in plants)?

Open in App
Solution

In plants, sucrose is the major transport form for photoassimilated carbon and is both a source of carbon skeletons and energy for plant organs unable to perform photosynthesis (sink organs). As a molecule translocated over distance, sucrosehas to pass through a number of membranes.

Being a complex structure, sucrose is not as much reactive as glucose. So plantsuses the sucrose as a medium to transfer energy. Inside the cells, sucrose is converted back to glucose and fructose. Energy is yielded when it is needed.
