Solution

Thermometer:

  1. Thermometer is a device that is used for measuring the degree of hotness and coolness of a body.
  2. Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first thermometer.
  3. There are different types of thermometers that are classified according to their needs, for example, there is one set of thermometers that are used to measure human body temperature (Celsius thermometer) while another set is used to measure the boiling point and freezing point (laboratory thermometer) during experiments.
  4. Different units to measure temperatures, like Celsius (°C), Kelvin (K), and Fahrenheit (°F).
Draw a neat labelled diagram of a laboratory thermometer.

Working of Thermometer:

  1. The tip of the thermometer has a bulb that contains mercury.
  2. When the tip of the mercury thermometer touches the materials it ought to measure the temperature of the material (generally metals expand on heating).
  3. As the material conducts heat energy to the mercury, it expands due to heat and rises up the capillary tube.
  4. The place where the mercury stops on the scale is where one can take the reading of the temperature.
  5. The case with the digital thermometer is different it shows the readings in digital number format.
