Solution

Examples of Tidal ports in India are Kandla Port and Kolkata port. Kolkata port is an inland riverine port, as it is a tidal port it requires constant dredging.

When there are high tides, it will be easier for the ships to enter the harbour. High tides also help in fishing and tides are used to generate electricity in some places.

Tides

The movements that exist in Oceans can be classified as tides, waves and currents. Brief information about the tides are given below.

  • The sea level rises and falls periodically, once or twice a day is called the tide.
  • This rise and fall is due to the gravitational attraction of the moon and the sun on earth’s surface.
  • The tides are the highest during new and full moon days.
  • When the gravitational pulls are in diagonally opposite directions, it results in low tides, known as neap tides.
