The term Tsunami means harbour wave. They can be represented as a wave series and the feature that distinguishes such waves is their long wavelength.

Tsunamis should not be mistaken with the wave produced by massive winds. A wind-generated wave persists for a few seconds, while Tsunami persists for minutes to hours. Tsunamis may be extremely damaging, which is not the wave generated by wind.

How Tsunamis generated?

• Earthquakes cause tsunamis.
• It should be observed that the sea floor’s vertical movement can produce these.
• Landslides may also cause tsunamis and even volcanic activity.

How often do Tsunamis occur?

• On average, a tsunami occurs in the Pacific Ocean every 15 years.
• An example to take from India itself that was the Indian Coast tsunami on 26 Dec 2004.
• It has caused immense damage to life and property.
