When a disturbance created in one part of space travels to some other part without any transfer of medium, then motion of such disturbance is called as wave motion and the disturbance itself is called a wave.
On the basis of requirement of material medium for propagation, waves can be classified as mechanical waves and non-mechanical (electromagnetic) waves.
