Air pollution is the introduction of particulates, gases, or other harmful substances into earth's atmosphere, causing diseases, allergies, death to humans, damage to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, or the natural or built environment.
Effects;
(i) SPM causes asthma, bronchitis and allergic cold.
(ii) Pollutant gases cause irritation in eyes, throat, and lungs.
(iii) Hydrocarbon vapours not only damage the internal organs but also cause cancer.
(iv) Lichens are very sensitive to pollution. Increased level of air pollutants reduces the incidence of lichens on the trees near roads.
(v) High level of pollutants like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide causes acid rain.
(vi) Increased level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere leads to global warming.
(vii) Increased levels of CFCs lead to depletion of ozone layer.
(viii) Air pollution has injurious effects on plants as well such as falling of leaves, reduced growth, degeneration of chlorophyll, etc.
