Question

What is amplitude of vibration? How is amplitude related to loudness?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

When a mechanical wave propagates through a medium, the particles of the medium begin to vibrate or oscillate about its mean position. Amplitude is the maximum displacement of a particle from its mean position.

Loudness is directly proportional to the amplitude of the sound vibration. More the amplitude, much louder is the sound.
