Question

What is an AC generator? Name the principle on which a dynamo is based.

Solution

Electric current generation:
The conducting wire containing the electric charges is placed in a particular magnetic field. The displacement of the wire will induce the charges to flow, which will establish a potential difference between the extreme ends of the conducting wire. As a result of this flow of electric charges can be observed and generates (produces) electric current.

AC generator:
It is a mechanical device that converts or transforms energy from the mechanical form into electrical form. Electric power is generated in airplanes, trains, automobiles with the help of generators.

Principle of a dynamo:
The dynamo works on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction principle. The conductor is put into a changing magnetic field or flux so that an induced emf is established and thus current induced into that conductor.
