Question

What is an active electrode? Explain with the help of an example

Open in App
Solution

Active electrode:

  • An active electrode is an electrode that is defined as the metal which is used to make electrochemical cells.
  • Active electrodes can be oxidized/reduced easily in comparison to other electrodes.
  • The active electrode is called ‘active’ as it actively participates in the chemical reaction.
  • They are used in electroplating.

Example:

  • Using Copper SulphateCuSO4 solution as electrolyte and copper electrodes.
  • Copper is electroplated on the negative electrode.
  • The Cu in the solution is replenished due to the addition of copper ionsCu2+ from the positive electrode.
