What is an alloy? Why are alloys made?

Open in App
Solution

Part I - Definition

Alloy is a homogenous mixture of two or more two metals or non-metals.

For example - Brass is an alloy of zinc (Zn)and (Cu) ).

Part II - Reason for making alloys

  • Metals or non-metals do not have enough physical strength and are corroded easily.
  • Hence alloys are made and they have enhanced physical properties than metals or non-metals.

For example - Stainless steel is used in place of iron because iron rust easily but stainless steel is rust-resistant.
