An altimeter is an instrument for determining altitude attained, especially a barometric or radar device fitted in an aircraft.
There are basically two types of altimeters - pressure altimeters and radio altimeters. Pressure altimeters are aneroid barometers calibrated to indicate altitude instead of pressure. It is based on the principle of drop of atmospheric pressure with gain of height. The corrugated capsules inside the casing expand with gain of height.
