Question

What is an electric current? State its unit?

Open in App
Solution

Electric current:

  1. The rate of flow of electric charge in an electric circuit.
  2. Electriccurrent(I)=chargeflown(Q)Time(t)
  3. Electric current is denoted by symbol I.
  4. Electric current is measured by a device known as an ammeter.

Unit of electric current:

  1. According to the formula of electric current i.e I=QT where Q= amount of charge flown and T= time.
  2. The unit of charge (Q) is coulomb (C) and time is second (s).
  3. The unit of current is Coulombsecond=Cs-1.
  4. When 1 coulomb (C) of charge is flowing through an electric circuit in 1 second (s), then-current is said to be 1 ampere. i.e 1Cs-1=1Ampere

Hence, the rate of flow of electric charge is called an electric current and its unit is ampere (A)
