What is an electric dipole? How does it behave in uniform and non-uniform electric field?

An electric dipole is a separation of positive and negative charges. The simplest example of this is a pair of electric charges of equal magnitude but opposite sign, separated by some (usually small) distance.
In a uniform electric field, the net force on the electric dipole is zero, but torque is non-zero. However, in a non-uniform electric field, both net force and torque are non-zero.
