Question

What is an electrochemical reaction?

Open in App
Solution

Electrochemical reaction:

  • Those chemical reactions in which electrical energy is consumed or produced are known as electrochemical reactions.
  • It is a process in which electrons flow between a solid electrode and a substance, such as an electrolyte.
  • This flow triggers an electric current through the electrodes, causing the reaction to liberate or absorb heat.
  • For example- In galvanic cell Zinc(Zn) and Copper(Cu) is used for a redox reaction to take place.
  • Zn(s)Zink+Cu+2(aq)CopperIonZn+2(aq)ZinkIon+Cu(s)Copper

Electrochemical cell:

An electrochemical cell is a device capable of either generating electrical energy from chemical reactions or facilitating chemical reactions through the introduction of electrical energy.
