Question

What is an electrolyte?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The substance or compound which can dissociate into its respective ions thereby conducting electricity is an electrolyte.
  2. Electrolytes conduct electricity by the flow of electrons.
  3. Ions are formed when they lose electrons present in them and conduct electricity by the flow of electrons produced this way.
  4. There are mainly two types of electrolytes strong and weak electrolytes.
  5. Strong electrolytes undergo complete dissociation and possess high conductivity than weak electrolytes.
  6. For weak electrolytes, they dissociate partially and only less number of ions are produced rest exist in the molecular form itself.
  7. There is another category called non-electrolyte which does not produce ions in any of its forms are not a conductor of electricity.
  8. So, electrolytes are the species or compounds that when dissociate produce ions and conduct electricity by the flow of electrons.
