The term refers to species that have disappeared from the fossil records for one or more periods, to reappear in later periods.
It can also be referred to as the species that were thought to be extinct but reappeared in later periods.

Coelacanth is a famous example of a Lazarus taxon.
This genus of ancient fishes is an example of the Lazarus taxon because the fishes of this genus went extinct about 66 million years ago, but have been rediscovered in South Africa.
