Solution

Pteridophytes:

  1. The first terrestrial vascular plants are pteridophytes.
  2. They primarily flourish in damp, shaded environments, while some plants can also grow in sand.
  3. Well-differentiated roots, stems, and leaves make up the bulk of the plant, known as a sporophyte.
  4. An underground rhizome makes up the stem.
  5. Like the Lycopodium, some Pteridophytes have tiny leaves called microphylls, while others have huge leaves called megaphylls (e.g., Pteris).
  6. Spores may also be present on the underside of leaves, named sporophylls.
  7. They produce spores to reproduce.
  8. There is a well-established vascular system with xylem (for water conduction) and phloem (for food conduction).
  9. They are also referred to as cryptogams because they don't produce flowers or seeds.
  10. Lycopsida (Selaginella), Sphenopsida (Equisetum), Psilopsida (Psilotum), and Pteropsida (Dryopteris) are the four classes of pteridophytes.
  11. Examples of Pteridophytes include Selaginella, Lycopodium, and Equisetum.
