Solution

Somatic mutation:

  1. The mutation that occurs after the formation of a zygote in the somatic cells or non-germ cells is called a somatic mutation.
  2. These mutations are not inherited, as they do not occur in the sex cells of the living organism.
  3. Instead, they are encoded in the genes present in the 22 sets of somatic or autosomal chromosomes.

Example of somatic mutation: Sporadic cancer is an example of a sporadic mutation.

  1. The most common type of cancer occurs due to somatic mutations in somatic cells, which leads to the uncontrolled growth of cells.
  2. About 80% of cases of cancers are sporadic.
