Sporophyte:

  1. Sporophyte is the diploid phase in the life cycle of a plant.
  2. The sporophyte divides by meiosis to form haploid spores, each of the spores divides mitotically to form a gametophyte.

Example of sporophyte:

  1. The sporophyte of mosses such as Funaria and Polytrichum is formed after fertilization.
  2. The sporophyte of mosses consists of the foot, seta, and capsule.
  3. The capsule contains the haploid spores which on dispersal by wind form the gametophyte i.e antheridia and archegonia.
