Transgenic animals are also called Genetically modified organisms, as their genome has been modified by adding foreign DNA.
Animals such as mice, fish, and pigs whose genome has been altered in a heritable manner by introducing foreign DNA into the genome of a zygote or developing embryos of these animals.
Transgenic animals can be created by injecting the transgene into the zygote of mice after fertilization through microinjection.
As the transgene gets incorporated with the genome of the zygote, it gets developed into a transgene animal.
Transgenic animals are produced for the production of monoclonal antibodies against viral diseases and used as a disease model.
Example of transgenic animals :
Transgenic Mouse:
The most commonly used transgenic animal for studying the effects of diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer's, AIDS, etc in humans.
The mouse has been historically used as a model because of their physiological, anatomical, and genomic similarities with humans.
The transgenic mouse is also used for the production of pharmaceutical products, testing vaccines, and blood replacement.
