Amide group:

  • When the Carboxyl group reacts with the molecule of the Amine group which upon heating form an Amide group.
  • They are represented by the general formula R-CO-NH2.

Example of an amide:

  • Aliphatic and aromatic primary and secondary amines undergo into acylation reaction when treated with acid chlorides, anhydrides, or esters to form a nucleophilic substituted amide.
  • This reaction consists of the replacement of the hydrogen atom of -NH2or-NH group.
  • To shift the equilibrium to the right-hand side, the HCl formed during the reaction is removed as soon as it is formed.
  • This reaction is carried out in the presence of a base (such as pyridine) which is stronger than the amine.
