Question

What is an example of diffusion in the human body?

Open in App
Solution

Diffusion:

  1. Diffusion is the passive movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration.
  2. Diffusion occurs without any energy expenditure.
  3. Temperature and pressure affect the rate of diffusion.
  4. Diffusion is a slow process, through which the movement of liquid and gaseous molecules occurs.

Example of diffusion in the human body:

  1. Exchange of gases in the lungs occurs by diffusion.
  2. Air in the alveoli has a higher concentration of oxygen and lower concentration of carbon dioxide compared to blood.
  3. Hence, oxygen diffuses to the blood from alveoli and carbon dioxide diffuses to alveoli from the blood.
